• The deceased has been identified as Police Corporal Reg No. 16573 Marlon Mitchell.
• Around 1:00am, Mitchell was shot during a confrontation with another man outside Lolita’s Bar along the Southern Main Road in Mc Bean Village, Couva.
• CCTV footage captured the incident which showed the officer walking to his vehicle before he approached the suspect and attacked him.
• A struggle ensued, during which the off-duty officer attempted to pull his licensed firearm from his waist when the man disarmed him and shot him in the chest, killing him at the scene.
• The police were notified and investigations are ongoing.
• The suspect, accompanied by his attorney, surrendered himself to the police earlier today.
Mitchell was the second police officer to be shot and killed for the year thus far.
Just on Wednesday 17th January, 2024, Pc Ravindra Harrinarine was shot and killed in Spring Village, Valsayn.
