The President of Guyana, His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, has given an update on the Tragedy that took place early on Monday 22nd May, 2023.
• He also declared three (3) days of official mourning with effect from yesterday, following the deaths of 19 students in the School Dormitory in Mahdia.
The fire at a school dormitory in Guyana which claimed the lives of at least 19 students and injured an undisclosed amount is said to have been maliciously set.
• The students who lost their lives to the fire are Bibi Rita Fiona Jeffery, 13; Sabrina John, 16; Loreen Evans, 14; Belnisa Evans,13; twin sisters Mary and Martha D’Andrade, 15; Omefia Edwin, Natalie Bellarmine, Andrea Roberts, 13; Lorita Williams, Nickleen Robinson, Sherena Daniels, Eulanda Carter, Lisa Roberts, Cleoma Simon, Tracil Thomas and sisters Delecia Edwards, 15; and Arianna Edwards, 13.
• The fire also claimed the life of 5-year-old Adonijah Jeron, who was the son of one of the house parents.
• The fire reportedly broke out around 10:30pm, trapping students in the dormitory building of a secondary school in Mahdia.
• A full-scale medical emergency action plan was immediately launched and planes loaded with medical supplies and personnel to assist the local officials were sent in.
• When the fire subsided, it was discovered that 19 students died and the critically injured victims were evacuated to Georgetown to seek medical attention.
• The Guyana Fire Service conducted their preliminary investigation and handed over their findings to the Guyana Police Force for further inquiry and to uncover the motives behind this heinous act.
