• He also declared three (3) days of official mourning with effect from yesterday, following the deaths of 19 students in the School Dormitory in Mahdia.

The fire at a school dormitory in Guyana which claimed the lives of at least 19 students and injured an undisclosed amount is said to have been maliciously set.

The students who lost their lives to the fire are Bibi Rita Fiona Jeffery, 13; Sabrina John, 16; Loreen Evans, 14; Belnisa Evans,13; twin sisters Mary and Martha D’Andrade, 15; Omefia Edwin, Natalie Bellarmine, Andrea Roberts, 13; Lorita Williams, Nickleen Robinson, Sherena Daniels, Eulanda Carter, Lisa Roberts, Cleoma Simon, Tracil Thomas and sisters Delecia Edwards, 15; and Arianna Edwards, 13.

• The fire also claimed the life of 5-year-old Adonijah Jeron, who was the son of one of the house parents.

• The fire reportedly broke out around 10:30pm, trapping students in the dormitory building of a secondary school in Mahdia.

• A full-scale medical emergency action plan was immediately launched and planes loaded with medical supplies and personnel to assist the local officials were sent in.

• When the fire subsided, it was discovered that 19 students died and the critically injured victims were evacuated to Georgetown to seek medical attention.

• The Guyana Fire Service conducted their preliminary investigation and handed over their findings to the Guyana Police Force for further inquiry and to uncover the motives behind this heinous act.
