The national archives, over the weekend, released a video showing this country’s third Independence Day parade which took place on August 31st 1965 in Port of Spain.
According to the national archives: “this parade featured various youth groups and military personnel. Historically, Independence Day has always been celebrated with an annual military-style parade in both Trinidad and in Tobago.
Between 1962 and 1976, the head of state (then governor-general) sir Solomon Hochoy was tasked with inspecting the parade in Trinidad, which he often did on horseback.
When Trinidad and Tobago became a republic in 1976, this role was assigned to the president. In our sister-isle of Tobago, the Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly usually inspects the parade.
This year, for our 60th-anniversary celebrations, the military parade will be held at the Queen’s Park Savannah on Wednesday 31st August, 2022 at 7:30am.
