The government is proposing a six-month ban on the export of scrap metal, including copper as it is seen as a national security threat to Trinidad and Tobago.

• Speaking at a press conference on Friday 6th August 2022, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds stated that it is an urgent move to prevent further theft, vandalism and “malicious damage” of millions of dollars of public utility infrastructure.

• He stated that effectively, the government is proposing a six-month ban on the exportation of old and new scrap iron, including copper, drain covers, manhole covers, etc.
