THERE ARE CLAIMS IN A DAILY NEWSPAPER THAT TEACHERS AT THE ST. FRANCOIS GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL ALONG THE ST. FRANCOIS VALLEY ROAD IN BELMONT WAS SEARCHING THE PICTURE AND VIDEO GALLERY OF THE CELL PHONES OF SOME STUDENTS.
• ACCORDING TO THE NEWSPAPER, SOME OF THE STUDENTS WERE ASKED TO UNLOCK THEIR PHONES WHICH WERE THEN TAKEN FROM THEM AND SEARCHED BY TEACHERS. THE NEWSPAPER QUOTED ON MALE PARENT AS BEING UPSET OVER THE INCIDENT INDICATING SUCH WAS A VIOLATION OF THE CHILD’S RIGHT TO PRIVACY.
• THE NEWSPAPERS QUOTED EDUCATION MINISTER NYAN GADBSY-DOLLY AS SAYING THAT THERE WAS AN INCIDENT AT THE SCHOOL THAT HAS BEEN REPORTED TO THE POLICE, WHERE SOME FEMALE STUDENTS WERE PART OF A 190+MEMBER WHATSAPP GROUP THAT SHARED PORNOGRAPHIC IMAGES AND VIDEOS OF SOME OF THE STUDENTS.
• THE INFORMATION WAS GIVEN TO THE SCHOOL BY ONE OF THE GIRLS WHO WAS IN THE GROUP AND THE PHONES OF SEVERAL OF THE GIRLS WERE KEPT BY THE SCHOOL OVERNIGHT AND THEIR PARENTS CALLED IN THE NEXT DAY FOR A MEETING.
• ONLY ONE PARENT AGREED TO HAVE THEIR CHILD’S PHONE SEARCHED IN THE PRESENCE OF SCHOOL OFFICIALS AND THE WHATSAPP GROUP, WHICH MAY CONTAIN ADULTS AND PERSONS USING FOREIGN NUMBERS, WAS DISCOVERED ALONG WITH SHARED PORNOGRAPHIC MATERIAL.
