In a follow up question, MP Charles quoted a July 2022 trafficking in persons report done by the US Government which he said stated that T&T did not take action against senior government officials involved in human trafficking in 2020.
• In response, the PM said the allegation was brought to the government’s attention but investigations actually revealed it referred to current Opposition MPs.
• MP Charles in response questioned why no action was taken, regardless of which side in parliament the allegations referred to but in response, the pm said the Government had no control of who the police investigate for alleged criminal conduct.
There has been a lot of controversy since the PM’s responses in Parliament on Friday with Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar calling on the Prime Minister to state which UNC MP there is who is a senior person in his Government.
