Man granted bail on charges of stealing portugals.

Farmers in the Coryal district are grateful to police officers after a man, who they allege had been stealing thousands of dollars in agriculture produce from their estates, was arrested by police.

29 year old Ronell Prescott appeared before a Sangre Grande Magistrate on Thursday, charged with larceny of 275 portugals and being found on cultivated lands.

Prescott who was charged similarly for having close to 700 pounds of green bananas and 100 pounds of chataigne seeds without lawful excuse in 2020, pleaded not guilty to both charges and was placed on $10,000 bail.

Reports indicate that a farmer of Coryal, who was a consistent victim of praedial larceny, allegedly saw Prescott picking portugals in his estate and placing them into a bag around 1pm on Wednesday.

An alarm was raised and Prescott allegedly dropped the bag and ran off. The farmer contacted the Cumuto Police and upon their arrival, pointed out the suspect who was immediately arrested.

Prescott was then handed over to Corporal Jeffers of the Praedial Larceny Squad who laid the charges. Prescott is to reappear in court on February 27th 2023.
