A man and his family’s pet dog were brutally murdered by his mentally ill son at their home in Freeport on Sunday 17th September, 2023.
• The deceased was identified as 58-year-old Deodath Gopie a PTSC employee of Grant Trace Ext. Beaucarro, Freeport.
• Around 4:00 a.m., PC Tull and PC Ramdeen of the Freeport CID received a report of a man armed with a cutlass in Beaucarro.
• She told the officers that around 3:30 a.m., she was asleep in her room when she was awoken by loud noises.
• When she got up to investigate, she observed her 34-year-old Mentally unstable son standing in front of her door with a cutlass in hand and blood dripping from his body and clothes.
• The suspect then attempted to attack her; however, she ran back into her room, locked the door and contacted the police.
• The responding officers then broke down a door at the side of the house and entered, when they discovered Gopie’s body on his bed with multiple chop wounds.
• They also found the family’s pet dog dead with chop injuries to the back.
• The officers then continued to search the premises where they later found the suspect bareback in a room with blood splattered across his body.
• He was subsequently taken into custody and was conveyed to the Couva District Health Facility for medical treatment.
• The DMO and the relevant authorities were summoned to the scene and processed by the Crime Scene investigators; however, the murder weapon was not found.
A similar incident took place on Wednesday 20th April, 2022, when a mentally unstable man identified as David Bremnor stabbed Michael Vialva to death and injured the deceased’s son and stepdaughter at their home in Field Trace, Diego Martin.
