Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard has warned that if the DPP’s Office does not get its required staffing, such could lead to a collapse of the criminal justice system in the country.
• The DPP made the statement during a telephone interview on the Morning show on i95.5fm on Wednesday where he said his office was in desperate need of attorneys to carry on prosecutions within the courts.
• Currently the office has approximately 58 prosecutors but is in need of 129, Gaspard said adding that since 2014, there was a Cabinet note which gave the approval of a recommendation for 129 attorneys for his Office.
• He described the problem as “acute and chronic”, adding that. “It is very critical where any time you reach a stage where the number of courts outnumber the number prosecutors, that must be an area of concern.”
