Cctv footage captured a robbery in progress at Roy’s Bar where a bandit was killed by police on Wednesday 14th June, 2023
• The deceased was only identified by his nickname “Darkman” while his accomplice was identified as 31-year-old Jamal Benn of Mt Hope Road, Mt Hope.
• Around 9:30 pm, a 53-year-old man was conducting sales at Roy’s sports bar at the corner of Bassie Street and Southern Main Road, Spring Village, Valsayn, when two men entered.
• One of the men, reportedly pulled out a firearm and announced a robbery.
• The suspects relieved the victim of an undisclosed sum of cash, a box of Johnnie Walker alcohol, and several packs of cigarettes from the business place, before robbing employees and patrons inside the bar.
• During the robbery, the police received a report and PC Nicholls and PC Beckles of the St Joseph police station along with officers of the northern division task force and air support unit responded.
• When they arrived at the scene, the two suspects were exiting the business and upon seeing the officers, Darkman allegedly fired several shots at the police who returned fire, hitting him several times.
• Darkman slumped to the ground and his accomplice Benn ran to the side of the building where he was caught hiding inside a toilet.
• Darkman was subsequently taken to the mt hope hospital where he succumbed to his injuries shortly after 10:00am.
• A Glock 45 pistol with the serial and 6 live rounds of ammunition, a black bag, and the stolen items were recovered at the scene by police.
• Crime scene investigators also visited the scene and recovered 22 spent 9mm shells casings, fired from the weapons of the responding officers along with 7 spent 45 shells casings fired from the weapon by the deceased suspect.
