Bail was refused to 51-year-old Junior Dexter Peters on three (3) charges in relation to the decades-old child sex abuse allegations at the St. Dominic’s Children’s Home.
• Peters, of Tunapuna, appeared before Port of Spain magistrate Maureen Baboolal-Gafoor as the alleged charges of attempted forced buggery and 2 counts of sexual indecency, were read to him.
• He was not called upon to plead as the charges laid are indictable.
• Peters was charged by woman corporal deonarine in relation to one of the alleged victims.
• Peters, who has been in custody at the Besson Street Police station since his arrest last week Friday, is expected to face three additional separate charges of buggery and 2 counts of serious indecency by WPC Bostic.
• He also faces similar charges from WPC Hudlin in relation to allegations against a third victim who was a past ward at the St. Dominic’s children’s home in Belmont.
• Magistrate Baboolal-Gafoor refused peters bail because the police fingerprint system was down and an initial check revealed he had two previous convictions. One for cruelty to an animal and the other for animal possession but this has to be confirmed by a proper tracing which should be done and made available to the court when he is expected to reappear on Friday 9th September 2022.
• On Tuesday, August 30th, police completed their investigations and approached the office of the director of public prosecutions who gave advice on Thursday to charge a suspect.
• A suspect was positively identified by three alleged victims on Friday 26th August 2022.
• Peters was taken into custody by officers of the child protection unit of the ttps, when he showed up for work last Friday.
• Peters, a former supervisor at the St. Dominic’s children’s home, took vacation leave shortly after the contents of the 1997 Sabga report, which specifically named him, became public.
• He resumed duties last week and was arrested and has been employed with the North West Regional Health Authority for over 20 years.
• He was assigned to the Port of Spain general hospital as a supervisor but when he resumed duties last week, he was reassigned to the St. Ann’s hospital where he was arrested by Sgt. Baptiste and woman Corporal Deonarine of the child protection unit.
