A man was reportedly shot dead during an alleged shootout with police in Couva on Thursday 03rd August, 2023.
• The deceased was identified as 20-year-old Josiah Vespre aka Zulu.
• Around 1:50pm, officers were on an exercise along Railway Road in Couva, when they stopped along the roadway.
• Shortly after they observed two persons running in opposite directions.
• A chase ensued and Vespre allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting at the officers who returned fire.
• Vespre sustained gunshot injuries and was taken to the Couva hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
• The officers also recovered a Glock pistol with a magazine as well as several spent shell casings.
This was the 28th police killing that was recorded for the year thus far.
Just on Friday 28th July, 2023, a Spanish national was shot dead during an alleged shootout with police at Powdharie Road, Preysal on Friday 28th July, 2023.
• The victim was taken to the Couva district health facility where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
