A fire at a school dormitory in Guyana claimed the lives of at least 19 students and injured an undisclosed amount early Monday 22nd May, 2023.
• 18 females along with a 5-year-old boy whose mother is employed at the school, died as a result of the raging fire.
• The fire reportedly broke out around midnight, trapping students in the dormitory building of a secondary school in the south-western border town of Mahdia, 200 miles south of the capital, Georgetown.
• A full-scale medical emergency action plan was immediately launched and planes loaded with medical supplies and personnel to assist the local officials were sent in.
• When the fire subsided, it was discovered that 19 students died and the critically injured victims were evacuated to Georgetown to seek medical attention
